Is Your Jewelry Box Hiding Money? How to Know What Gold Is Worth Selling
If you've ever opened your jewelry box and thought, "I should really do something with this someday," consider this your sign.
Most of us have a collection of pieces tucked away that we never wear—broken chains, single earrings, outdated styles, tangled necklaces, gifts that weren't quite our thing, or pieces we've simply outgrown. And while they may not have much value sitting in a drawer, they could be worth more than you think.
One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that jewelry has to be beautiful, wearable, or complete to have value. That's simply not true. When it comes to gold, the value is often in the metal itself.

What Gold Can You Sell?
You might be surprised by what qualifies. Some of the most common items people bring in include:
-
Broken gold chains
-
Single earrings missing their match
-
Outdated or damaged rings
-
Unworn gold bracelets
-
Scrap gold pieces
-
Gold charms you'll never wear again
-
Jewelry that's been sitting in a box for years
Just because a piece isn't wearable doesn't mean it isn't valuable.
How Do You Know if It's Real Gold?
The easiest place to start is by looking for a stamp.
You may see markings like:
- 10k
- 14k
- 18k
- 22k
These markings indicate the gold content of the piece. Generally speaking, the higher the karat, the more pure gold the item contains.
Don't see a stamp? Don't worry. Many older pieces have worn markings or no visible markings at all. That's where a professional evaluation comes in. We can test your pieces right in our showroom so we can get a clear picture of the worth of each pice.
How Much Is My Gold Worth?
Speaking of worth, this is the question everyone wants answered. The value of gold jewelry depends on several factors, including:
- Gold purity (10k, 14k, 18k, etc.)
- Weight
- Current gold market prices
- Whether the piece has collectible or designer value beyond the gold itself
That's why two pieces that look similar can have very different values. A lot of times, things like hoops or chunkier chains can be hollowed out to save on cost.
Before You Sell, Ask Yourself One Question
Would I wear this if it looked different? I always encourage people to think about this before selling inherited or sentimental jewelry. Sometimes a piece isn't right in its current form, but the diamonds, gemstones, or gold could become something you'll actually wear. A redesign can often give new life to a piece that otherwise feels outdated.
Other times, the answer is simple: you don't wear it, you won't wear it, and you're ready to move on. Both answers are perfectly okay.

Why a Gold Buying Event Is Different Than a Gold Buying Kiosk
When most people think about selling gold, they picture a mall kiosk or mailing their jewelry off to a company they've never heard of. Or better yet, walking into a shop with a sketchy person behind the counter who makes you feel like you're being taken advantage of.
At Porterfi, the conversation is a little different. My goal isn't to convince you to sell everything you bring in. Sometimes the best option is selling. Sometimes it's redesigning. Sometimes it's keeping a piece because it has more meaning than monetary value. Sometimes its as simple as finding a new way to wear an old piece that will give it new life.
I love helping people sort through those decisions so they can feel confident about what stays, what goes, and what deserves a second life.
But Why Sell to Porterfi?
Not only will we sit down, weigh, and test your pieces together, but we will offer you options. In addition to a cash price, we also offer an additional 25% if you decide to take store credit instead. I always encourage clients to browse the website and create a wishlist prior to your visit.
