What Jewelry Can You Wear Every Day? A Real-Life Guide to Sleeping, Showering, Swimming & Living in Your Jewelry
Let's settle this once and for all. One of the most common questions I get at Porterfi is: "Can I leave this on?" And honestly? I love that question.
Because while I appreciate a special-occasion, fancy jewelry moment, I'm a much bigger fan of jewelry that becomes part of your life. The necklace you forget you're wearing. The bracelet that never leaves your wrist. The ring that somehow makes every outfit feel a little more you.
So let's talk about what jewelry can actually keep up with real life—and what deserves a little extra TLC.
First Things First: Not All Jewelry Is Created Equal
If you've ever bought a "gold" necklace only to watch it turn colors a few months later, you already know this.
When I talk about everyday jewelry, I'm talking about pieces made from high-quality materials like solid 14k or 18k gold, durable gemstones, and thoughtfully crafted designs. These are the pieces designed to be worn often—not stored away waiting for the perfect occasion.
Can You Shower With Gold Jewelry?
The short answer? Usually, yes.
Solid gold jewelry is incredibly durable and far more resilient than gold-plated or filled jewelry. A quick shower won't hurt your favorite gold necklace or bracelet. That said, soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and body products can leave residue behind, making jewelry appear dull over time.
My recommendation? Live your life. Wear your jewelry. Just give it an occasional cleaning to keep it sparkling. (I wrote a blog about cleaning your diamond jewelry HERE).

Can Fine Jewelry Get Wet?
This is where things get a little more nuanced. Rain? Fine. Washing your hands? Fine. Getting caught in an unexpected lake day? Also probably fine. But frequent exposure to chlorine, hot tubs, and harsh chemicals can take a toll on both metals and gemstones over time.
If you're planning a pool day or spa day, it's worth taking your jewelry off beforehand. Think of it like sunscreen. A little prevention goes a long way.
However, if you do find yourself with your favorite gold jewelry spending time in a hot tub, you may notice some dark discoloration that will occur. But never fear! Our polishing cloths will help shine up your pieces as good as new.
Can You Sleep in Your Jewelry?
If you're anything like me, you probably don't want to remember to take ALL of your jewelry off every night. The good news? Many fine jewelry pieces are perfectly comfortable for sleeping.
Small studs, delicate necklaces, and low-profile rings are generally great candidates for around-the-clock wear.
One of the most comfortable options are stud earrings with a flat back instead of a butterfly back. You can browse through our current selections of them HERE.
The only pieces I'd remove before bed? Large hoops, omega chains, statement earrings, and anything likely to snag on bedding. Your pillow will thank you.

Can You Wear Jewelry While Working Out?
This depends on the activity. Walking? Pilates? Running errands while carrying three iced coffees and answering emails? You're good.
Heavy lifting, rock climbing, contact sports, or activities that put pressure on rings and chains? That's where I suggest being a little more cautious.
A simple SHORT gold chain or beaded bracelet can usually keep up with your everyday routine, but no piece of jewelry enjoys getting repeatedly smacked by a dumbbell.
My hack for gym jewelry is on my Instagram, but if you wear a shorter necklace like this Mini Diamond Warrior Necklace from Latelier Nawbar, you can safely thread your rings onto the chain and wear them while you lift weights. No more worrying that you'll leave them in the locker.
The Best Jewelry for Everyday Wear
If you're building a jewelry wardrobe you'll actually wear, I always recommend focusing on versatile pieces that can move effortlessly through your day.
A Great Necklace
The Cascading Diamond Bar Necklace from Anne Sportun is the perfect NTO piece ("Never Take Off"). It's the kind of necklace that somehow works with a white tee, a swimsuit cover-up, and a wedding guest dress.

A Bracelet You Never Take Off
I'm a big believer in bracelets that become part of your signature look.
The Golden Bamboo Tube Silk Cord Bracelet by Luis Morais is one of my favorite "set it and forget it" pieces. The silk cords are fully adjustable, can handle all forms of water, and are extremely durable.
A Ring That Goes With Everything
The Cléo Geometric Stackable Ring from Anzie proves that everyday jewelry doesn't have to be boring. Simple, modern, and endlessly stackable, it's exactly the kind of piece you'll reach for every morning.
My Rule for Everyday Jewelry
The best jewelry isn't the piece sitting in your jewelry box waiting for a special occasion. It's the piece that joins you for school drop-offs, grocery runs, date nights, vacations, meetings, workouts, and all the beautifully ordinary moments in between.
Because jewelry should fit into your life—not the other way around. So can you shower in it? Sleep in it? Live in it? For the right piece, absolutely.
And those are exactly the kinds of pieces I love helping people find at Porterfi.
