Jewelry 101: How To Keep Your Necklaces From Tangling
Necklace Layering 101: How to Master the Art of the Perfect Stack
My number one question I get asked as a "jewelry expert" is how to keep your necklaces from tangling. There's some good news and bad news. The bad news is, there's no fool proof way to keep them from ever tangling. The good news is, there are some guidelines you can follow to help minimize the mess. Whether you’re mixing metals, playing with textures, or layering your favorite pendants, mastering the art of necklace layering is all about balance.
At Porterfi, we believe jewelry should feel like you — elevated but easy. Here’s your go-to guide for creating a layered necklace look that’s timeless, versatile, and totally your own.

1. Start with the Basics: Play with Lengths
The key to a great necklace stack is variation. Think of it like styling your outfit — you want dimension, not uniformity. Start with three lengths that naturally fall at different points:
-
Short (14–16”) – Think chokers, cable chains, or dainty strands that sit close to the collarbone. This Julez Bryant Double Strand Choker is a perfect starting point.
-
Mid (18–20”) – Perfect for pendants or charms that draw the eye to the center of your neckline. We LOVE this White Space Kenna Pearl Necklace. The chain is so unique!
-
Long (22” and up) – Add flow and drama with a long pendant, beaded strand, or lariat style. Adding this Luis Morais Beaded Necklace right over your head is so easy and adds a fun pop to your outfit.
2. Mix Your Textures and Materials
One of the most overlooked secrets to necklace layering is texture. Mixing different chain styles keeps your look from falling flat (and helps them from wrapping around each other). Try combining:
-
A classic cable chain (your everyday essential)
-
A paperclip or elongated link chain (adds structure and modern polish) -- This chunky 24" Paperclip Chain pairs perfectly with the Kate Collins Diamond Clicker.
-
A beaded or gemstone strand (adds color and a touch of energy).
-
A leather cord or silk thread (unexpected, bohemian, and cool when paired with gold) -- We love these simple and casual Leather Cord options.
The contrast between hard metals and softer materials adds depth — and gives your stack that “collected over time” vibe that feels natural and personal.

3. Anchor Your Look with Meaningful Charms
Every great necklace stack needs a focal point. The trick? Incorporate pieces where the charm or pendant is anchored directly into the chain. These styles create visual breaks that keep your layers from tangling or feeling too heavy.
Try mixing one anchored charm piece (like this adorable Alison Lou Pasta Bowtie Pasta Necklace) with looser pendants on longer chains that move more freely. The mix of fixed and hanging elements brings balance and keeps your layers intentional rather than cluttered.
Your Everyday Layering Edit
If you’re building your collection from scratch, here’s a simple formula we love at Porterfi:
-
A foundational chain — like a solid gold cable or paperclip chain.
-
A statement pendant — something that reflects your style.
-
A textured or beaded necklace — to add interest and a pop of color.
-
An anchored charm necklace — that ties everything together.
Once you’ve built your base, the fun part is swapping in new pieces as your mood (or outfit) changes.
